Welcome...

Philip Goggin

I am now semi-retired, having been a school teacher in three different schools, a university lecturer (mainly providing initial teacher training and INSET for teachers) and a church minister (with a broad range of responsibilities and interests which included ecumenical projects, school assemblies, hospital chaplaincy, community projects, and promoting mental health and wellbeing). Since formal retirement in 2020, I have officiated at many Crematorium funerals, and actively  supported those who have been bereaved.

I was born in Durban, South Africa, and educated partly in Southern Africa but mainly in England. I hold degrees from the Universities of Rhodes (South Africa), London, Leeds and Keele.

Over the years I have had several articles published in various journals and magazines, most recently in 'Breathe', an international magazine with a focus on well-being and mindfulness. I have contributed chapters to books on education. My most recent book publication is 'Beyond Sight and Touch: Indelible Realities'.

I have wide interests, including mental health, education, psychology, philosophy, local history, the work of The National Trust, spirituality and religion. I enjoy playing the piano and organ, as well as travel - especially in North America and Southern Africa.  I love TV documentaries with an historical or geographical focus,  and programmes about classic cars - my favourite being “Bangers & Cash”.  Living near Nantwich in Cheshire with my wife, Gail, we have great opportunities to explore the countryside and coastal areas of North Wales and Lancashire. My 3 grown-up children and 6 grandchildren (ages 2 to 18) all  live about a half hour drive away.

Guest Speaking

Guest Speaking

Having extensive experience as a lecturer at University and a church minister, I now use my presenting and lecturing skills in a more informal setting delivering guest speaking and after dinner speeches at various events around Cheshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.

My topics can be anything from philosophical thought-provoking discussions raised in my Beyond Sight and Touch: Indelible Realities published book, to educational or religious topics. My speeches are light-hearted and I am known for a dry sense of humour, but am sympathetic to the surroundings and topic that I am discussing. I like my talks to be interactive and welcome questions from the audience that I will answer to the best of my ability.

Examples of some of the topics I can present on, but am not limited to:

  • TIME and timelessness

  • MUSIC and timelessness (this can also include me playing the piano or organ)

  • A discussion on RITUALS

  • Discussion on how a PLACE can hold a story

  • Our sense of RIGHT and WRONG

  • The call of NATURE

  • SCIENCE – a discussion on unanswered questions, quantum physics

  • Everlasting LOVE

  • Living creatively with DEATH

  • Finding a deeper timeless MEANING TO LIFE whilst inevitably living in a way that is bounded by space and time

  • MENTAL HEALTH and WELLBEING

  • Stories of SCHOOL Assemblies and other educational insights

  • Various RELIGIOUS discussions

To enquire about booking me as your guest speaker, please use the contact form and provide as much detail as possible for me to then get back to you and discuss further.
